It could also bleed internally or twist an ovary. Should the corpus luteum cyst rupture this may lead to internal bleeding and possibly sharp or excruciating pain.

It is important to note that the fertility drug clomiphene citrate, which is commonly used to induce ovulation, might be one of the causes of ovarian cysts, since it can often increase the risk of the development of a corpus luteum cyst. Corpus luteum cysts do not prevent or threaten pregnancy.

Some cysts, for example the hemorrhagic or endometrioid cysts develop in the same way as other cysts but are given this classification because they contain blood. This blood can result from injury or from the leakage of blood vessels into the egg sac. Causes of ovarian cysts forming in the endometrial tissue include bleeding and sloughing off of endometrial tissue that transplants itself in the ovaries. Blood can swell up until the cyst ruptures and may cause pelvic pain.

Many ovarian cysts will develop as a consequence of many normal and healthy processes going on in the body so it is impossible to completely prevent ovarian cysts from growing. With this said, by being sensible about your lifestyle i.e. getting exercise, eating a healthy and sensible diet and minimizing stress levels you can significantly reduce the chances of developing ovarian cysts.
